Grid Infrastructure Award: envelio recognized in the “Technologies of Change” category at the Reuters Energy Industry Awards
Modernizing power grids: The award honors companies whose scalable innovations deliver proven benefits for grid operators
Award-winning Intelligent Grid Platform: More than 90 grid operators worldwide use envelio’s comprehensive Intelligent Grid Platform to prepare their grid operations for the future
Cologne, July 1, 2026 – envelio, Europe’s leading provider of smart grid software, has won the Reuters Events Grid Infrastructure Award. The Cologne-based software company impressed the jury in the “Technologies of Change” category at the international Reuters Events Energy Industry Awards, which were presented in New York City on June 22, 2026.
The awards recognize innovations that deliver real value: solutions that can be scaled and used in real-world operating environments. envelio embodies this with its Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP), which is now used by more than 90 distribution system operators worldwide, covering around 320,000 modeled distribution grids and more than 40 million mapped grid connections.
Dr. Simon Koopmann, CEO of envelio, commented: „We are incredibly proud of this award and absolutely delighted. The energy transition will be won or lost in the distribution grids. Every day, we work hard to provide grid operators with the ideal software solution to prepare them for the grid operations of the future. We are grateful for the Grid Infrastructure Award, which recognizes the efforts of the entire envelio team.“
The award also reflects envelio’s continued commitment to innovation. The company recently unveiled a patent-pending, GPU-based power flow solver that reduces computing times for annual time-series simulations from days or weeks to less than 30 seconds, making it up to 20,000 times faster than standard desktop tools for grid calculations.
Unlike AI-based estimation methods, the GPU-based power flow solver uses physics-based calculations built on the digital grid twin. This gives grid operators reliable results and enables them to move from point-in-time assessments focused on peak loads to continuous, time-series-based planning.
“The power grid of tomorrow requires faster, more transparent and scalable decision-making,” Dr. Koopmann added. “From automating core grid processes to developing new approaches such as our GPU-based power flow solver, we are working toward one goal: helping grid operators get more out of their existing infrastructure and plan their grids for the future with confidence.”
envelio's Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP) is a comprehensive software solution for the efficient planning and operational management of power grids, providing a digital twin that processes, corrects and visualizes existing data. As the need for grid investment and complexity increases amid a high volume of connections, the platform’s holistic approach ensures that grid data and planning drive effective investments, enhance grid reliability, and enable scalable processes. Thanks to the modular architecture of the award-winning software, it adapts to DSOs of all sizes, making it a unique solution to the challenges of decentralized energy supply and distribution grid expansion. envelio's IGP empowers grid operators to optimize and automate processes, laying the foundation for a rapid and decentralized global energy transition.
envelio was founded in 2017 as a spin-off from RWTH Aachen University and develops software for grid operators. With its proprietary Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP), the company gives grid operators transparent insights into actual grid conditions. The digital twin helps utilities automate and digitalize processes, identify grid vulnerabilities, manage grid connections more efficiently, and plan distribution grid expansion based on actual needs. Headquartered in Cologne, Germany, envelio provides the foundation for flexible smart grids and a rapid, decentralized energy transition.
