AI Assistants for Grid Planning and Operations: envelio Integrates IGP Agents
6:38
  • The latest development from envelio’s Innovation Hub: With the IGP Agents, the Intelligent Grid Platform receives AI assistants. They simplify and accelerate operations, supporting experts in tackling challenging tasks related to the planning and operation of power grids.

  • The IGP Agents connect the entire PlanOps platform through agent-based technology: Users can formulate their task in natural language – the IGP Agents understand the context, access the appropriate functions and data, utilise physics-based simulations and coordinate specialised agents to deliver a seamless solution.

  • Experience it live: envelio will present the IGP Agents for the first time at BDEW Treffpunkt Netze (30 September–1 October 2026) in Berlin, Germany.

Cologne, 28.09.2026 – envelio, Europe’s leading smart grid software provider, is expanding its successful software platform with its latest innovation: IGP Agents represent the agent-based evolution of the Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP). This AI application connects users with specialised agents and the physics-based intelligence of the IGP. This makes complex tasks in planning, grid connection, operations management and mobile grid services easier, faster and more straightforward.

As part of the energy transition, the planning and operation of power grids are becoming increasingly complex, which is why data-driven decisions will be indispensable in the future. To simulate real-world physical scenarios, grid operators need modern tools.

envelio is pursuing this goal with its IGP Agents. Thanks to them, the Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP) becomes smarter and more capable of collaborating with the people who work on and with the grid every day. These AI applications are much more than just chatbots or a new search function. The agents can understand tasks, simulate them on the grid, structure the results and process them across multiple IGP areas. In doing so, they can access the same data as users, from load flow simulations to grid modifications.

Dr. Simon Koopmann, CEO of envelio, says: „In the wake of the energy transition, grid operators are facing a multitude of challenges. Grid expansion must be accelerated in many areas simultaneously, yet there is a shortage of skilled workers, and capital and hardware are in short supply. These bottlenecks cannot be resolved by software alone. However, software can help ensure that existing staff, grid capacities and scarce resources are utilised more effectively. With this goal in mind, we developed our IGP Agents. Rather than having to gather information and functions across departments and roles themselves, users can initiate complex tasks. The agents will support grid operator staff. This creates scalability – especially in times of shortage of skilled workers.“

IGP Agents can handle complex requests: Tasks are automatically assigned to specialised agents who carry them out directly within the platform. The result is not just text; the agents access the IGP’s physics-based simulations, run them and evaluate the technical impact on the grid.
With the help of IGP Agents, tasks such as analyzing battery storage allocation procedures, identifying errors in the grid model, and detecting critical grids throughout the entire grid area can be carried out efficiently using natural language. This allows grid operators to speed up essential processes, from connection reviews to grid planning.

Security is the top priority

Grid operators work with sensitive data related to critical infrastructure, so protecting that data is the top priority at all times. Therefore, this data is neither transmitted to commercial AI providers nor used to train them. Two key principles ensure the additional security of the IGP Agents:

  • Human-in-the-loop: IGP agents can suggest analyses, studies or actions, but cannot execute anything without explicit approval.
  • Data minimisation by design: Regardless of user permissions, personal data is removed or anonymised before being transferred to the language model, while technical network data is retained.
Furthermore, the language model only has limited, read-only access in the background. Maps and charts are displayed locally and the language model runs in a sovereign European environment, with no data stored.

Timeline: Testing phase is already underway, market launch is planned for early 2027

The IGP Agents are currently in the testing phase with various grid operators. Based on customer feedback, they are being further developed in a targeted manner. The market launch is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027. Those interested in learning more about envelio’s latest development will have the opportunity to visit the software providers‘s booth at the „Treffpunkt Netze“ (BDEW) event in Berlin, Germany on 30 September and 1 October 2026 to experience a demo version of the IGP Agents. Existing envelio customers are kindly invited to participate in the current testing phase.

About the Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP):

envelio's Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP) is a comprehensive software solution for the efficient planning and operational management of distribution grids, providing a digital twin that processes, corrects and visualises existing data. As smart metering increases the volume of data, the platform's accuracy improves, providing transparency into grid processes. The award-winning software adapts to different sizes of grid operators, making it a unique solution to the challenges of decentralised energy supply and distribution grid expansion. Envelio's IGP enables grid operators to optimise and automate processes, laying the foundation for a rapid and decentralised global energy transition.

About envelio:

Founded in 2017 as a spin-off of RWTH Aachen, envelio provides software for network operators. With its specially developed Intelligent Grid Platform, the cleantech company offers its customers a transparent insight into actual network operations. The digital twin enables network operators to optimize processes through automation and digitization, address network vulnerabilities, and automate network connections. Based in Cologne, the award-winning software company aims to offer its platform solution in more markets, further advancing its internationalization.
