Eversource Energy is first U.S. Customer to innovate the interconnection process with the IGP from envelio
- Eversource Energy, a Fortune 500 company, is envelio’s first U.S. client
- envelio’s award-winning software is deployed by Eversource to accelerate and stream-line the grid interconnection process
- Together, the companies drive the U.S. energy transition
Boston, September 9, 2024 – Eversource Energy, New England’s largest energy utility, is envelio’s first U.S. customer after the German market leader in smart grid software expanded into the U.S. with the formation of envelio Inc. in May 2024. envelio’s software is already being used successfully by grid operators in Germany and Europe. Now the Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP) will enable Ever-source to accelerate and streamline the grid interconnection process. A new customer interface will consolidate all interconnection information, including advanced hosting capacity, to improve the siting and application process. Building on the IGP’s Grid Hub, the interconnection study processes, and analysis will be enhanced through automation to efficiently handle the increasing volume of new applications. Eversource will take a leadership role in the energy sector by innovating its processes and tackling the energy transition in the United States, starting in Massachusetts.
Integrating renewable generation capacity into the grid is a key challenge for the U.S. energy transition. There are already more than 1,200 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind capacity waiting to be connected to the grid. envelio aims to unlock this potential by enabling grid operators and utili-ties to automate and dramatically accelerate the grid interconnection process. The German market leader for grid digital twins is now realizing this goal with Eversource, just three months after enter-ing the market.
Award-winning Intelligent Grid Platform successfully deployed in 50 percent of the German grid and leading in Europe
The software specialist has been successfully offering its Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP) in Europe for some time and has won the internationally renowned BloombergNEF Award in the category of “Challenge 1: Relieving bottlenecks in the deployment of clean power” among other awards.
The IGP builds up and manages a digital twin of the power grid with a powerful network model management engine called Grid Hub. On this basis, the IGP provides a suite of integrated appli-cations for interconnection, grid planning, and operation while bringing grid operators the trans-parency they need on their grids.
In Germany alone, envelio has used the IGP to automate the process of more than 55,000 inter-connection studies in the last 12 months, saving more than 50,000 hours of work for engineers and technical planners. In addition, the IGP provides applications for data-driven decisions in oth-er grid planning and operation processes.
With the IGP, Eversource is now able to digitally monitor its electric grid on an ongoing basis and automatically review grid connection requests. This greatly streamlines the process and reduces the amount of internal labor.
Luigi Montana, CEO of envelio Inc., states: “We are proud to have won Eversource as a prestig-ious customer as we expand into the U.S. market. The growing number of grid interconnections amid the energy transition is not only a challenge but can also be an opportunity. We look forward to supporting Eversource with our software and working together to drive the energy transition forward in Massachusetts and the U.S.“
About Eversource:

With approximately 9,900 employees, its mission is to safely deliver reliable energy and water with superior customer service. Its program in Massa-chusetts helped Eversource to be named the #1 energy efficiency provider in the nation according to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy’s (ACEEE) Utility Energy Efficiency Scorecard. The company is empowering a clean energy future in the Northeast, with nationally recognized energy efficiency solutions and successful programs to integrate new clean energy resources into the electric system. These programs include a first-in-the-nation networked geo-thermal pilot project, solar, offshore wind, electric vehicles and battery storage. www.eversource.com
About envelio Inc.:
envelio Inc. was founded in Boston in May 2024 to drive the U.S. energy transition through smart grid software. With its proprietary Intelligent Grid Platform, the cleantech company offers its cus-tomers a transparent insight into actual grid operations and a variety of tools for resilient grid plan-ning. The digital twin enables grid operators to optimize processes through automation and digiti-zation, address grid vulnerabilities, visualize and plan hosting capacity and automate grid connec-tions. More than 60 utilities have now adopted and scaled the Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP), in-cluding E.ON, which operates the largest distribution grid in Europe. envelio Inc. is a spin-off of the award-winning German company envelio GmbH, which was founded in 2017 by the RWTH Aachen University and is based in Cologne, Germany.
About the Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP):
envelio’s Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP) is a comprehensive software solution for the efficient plan-ning and operational management of power grids. It provides a digital twin that processes, harmo-nizes, and visualizes existing data. As the need for grid investment and complexity increases amid a growing number of interconnections, the platform’s holistic approach ensures that grid data and planning drive effective investments, enhance grid reliability, and enable scalable processes. Thanks to the modular architecture of the award-winning software, it adapts to grid operators of all sizes, making it a unique solution to the challenges of decentralized energy supply and distribu-tion grid expansion. envelio’s IGP empowers grid operators to optimize and automate processes, laying the foundation for a rapid and decentralized global energy transition.
